What do you get when you add science to the art of Sautéing?

In addition to being helpful and funny, Alton Brown brings a whole new level of intelligence to the TV cooking world. Anyone can teach you how to knead bread, but can you think of anyone else who also shows you why it works--with sock puppets no less??

The Top Five Reasons Alton Brown is the Smartest TV-Chef

  • He uses big words-- and makes up new ones when necessary
  • He's friends with a Nutritional Anthropologist
  • He knows that cooking is an art and a science
  • Sock Puppets!
  • He makes fun of Emeril

let's talk cookies!

I'm sure you've noticed that some cookies are crispy, some are chewy and some are soft--almost like cake. But do you know why cookies turn out so differently? Alton, with the help of cookie monster's cousin shows us in the two videos below.

My Favorite Alton Brown Recipies

Lest you believe Alton Brown is all gimmick--the recipes he teaches are also amazing. Here are links to two of my favorites.
Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing Recipe
This is the Spinach Salad recipe that convinced my boyfriend to eat spinach. I eat it just as the recipe states (sometimes without mushrooms) and said boyfriend eats it with just spinach, bacon and dressing--both ways it is delicious. I've also made it by substituting Olive Oil for the Bacon Fat--not quite the same, but still yummy and much better for you.
Brown Rice Crispy Bar Recipe
I love regular rice crispy bars, but I think I might like these better. I couldn't find puffed brown rice so I used Kashi's 7 whole grain puffs instead. I also substituted Canola oil for the flax oil which tastes better and doesn't require the double boiler work. Finally we used Pecans as our nuts-- delicious!

Create an Alton Brown Kittchen

Alton doesn't have a line of kitchen products like some food network people (I'm looking at you, Rachel Ray!!) but he does use some distinctive tools--many of which are available on the internet!

Being Cajun, I like Emeril. I'll have to watch Alton. Sounds like fun and I'm sure I could learn a thing or two.
